Proprietary Compass Technology
Super Tough Ceramic Core Pools
Every Compass Pool is built with a ceramic composite core — a proprietary technology developed by Compass in the 1990s that makes our pools stronger, more durable, and virtually immune to osmosis.
Not All Fibreglass Pools Are Built the Same
When Compass Pools looked at the standard approach to fibreglass pool manufacturing in the 1990s, we weren't satisfied. Traditional pools were built to industry minimum standards — we wanted something that would genuinely last a lifetime.
The answer was the Ceramic Core — a thick structural layer within the pool shell made by combining vinyl ester resin (a highly water-resistant resin) with ceramic microspheres (super-strong, waterproof spheres originally developed for aerospace applications).
The result is a fibreglass composite pool unlike anything else on the market. Similar composite materials are used in aerospace, high-performance trains and racing boats. Compass was the first — and remains the only — pool manufacturer to use this technology.
What Makes the Ceramic Core Different
When you look at a cross-section of a Compass pool, the ceramic core is clearly visible. It's what sets Compass apart.
Vinyl Ester Resin
Far more water-resistant than the standard polyester resin used by most manufacturers — and Compass uses more of it than any competitor.
Ceramic Microspheres
Originally developed for aerospace applications, these ultra-strong, waterproof ceramic spheres are blended into the resin to create a uniquely tough and chemically resistant composite core.
Proprietary Process
Compass developed a modified spraying process to apply this blend — forming a thick, structural ceramic composite layer that significantly improves panel stiffness and impact resistance.
The Result
A visibly thicker, tougher pool shell — clearly seen in cross-section — that no other manufacturer in the world produces.
Why a Stronger Pool Shell Matters for Your Backyard
Not all sites are equal — and in Australia, soil conditions can be demanding.
Reactive Soil & Ground Movement
In many parts of Australia, soil expands and contracts significantly between wet and dry periods. In areas prone to reactive soil or ground movement, a standard fibreglass shell can flex beyond its limits. The thick ceramic core in every Compass Pool enhances shell strength while still allowing enough flexibility to handle these conditions safely.
Osmosis Prevention
Osmosis occurs when water passes through the pool shell, causing unsightly black blisters and structural damage over time. The ceramic core creates a chemically stable, waterproof barrier that makes osmosis virtually impossible — unlike pools built with standard polyester resin, which are far more susceptible.
Long-Term Value
A stronger pool is a better investment. The ceramic core directly underpins the industry-leading warranties that Compass is able to offer — because we're confident enough in the material to back it up for life.
Discuss Your Pool ProjectAerospace-Grade Technology in Every Pool
The same class of composite materials used in Compass pools is also found in high-performance aircraft, trains and racing boats.
Aerospace Applications
Ceramic microsphere composites were originally developed for aerospace — where strength-to-weight ratio is critical.
High-Performance Trains
Similar composite materials are used in the structural panels of high-performance rail vehicles, prized for durability and light weight.
Racing Boats
The marine composite industry relies on vinyl ester and ceramic composites for hulls exposed to sustained water pressure — the same conditions your pool faces every day.
"You guys have got a ceramic core which obviously doubly helps on chemical resistance but its main reason is core strength. That then tells the story that your pool is a lot thicker than anyone else's. To my knowledge no one else uses e-sphere resin, certainly not filled with ceramic core. I think you'd struggle to find a better laminated fibreglass pool."

Frequently Asked Questions About the Ceramic Core
Everything you need to know about what makes Compass pools structurally superior.
What is a ceramic core in a fibreglass pool?
Compass has a ceramic core, a technology developed by Compass in the 1990s to add strength and durability to the pool shell. It's made by combining vinyl ester resin (a highly water-resistant resin) with ceramic microspheres (super-strong, waterproof spheres originally developed for aerospace applications). This mixture forms a thick structural layer within the pool shell that reduces the risk of osmosis and improves tensile strength to help the pool cope with changing ground conditions.
Why is it important to have a stronger fibreglass pool shell?
Not all fibreglass pools are equal, and your site conditions matter when choosing a pool. In some areas, soil can expand and contract significantly between wet and dry periods. In locations prone to reactive soil or ground movement, a tougher pool shell is essential. The thick ceramic core in every Compass Pool enhances the shell's strength while still allowing some flexibility to handle these conditions.
Does the ceramic core prevent osmosis?
Yes. The ceramic core creates a chemically stable, waterproof layer that stops water from passing through the pool shell. This makes it virtually impossible for structural osmosis to develop, which can otherwise cause unsightly black blisters when lower-quality resins are used.
Does a Compass Ceramic Core pool come with additional warranties?
Yes. Compass Pools offers what we believe is one of the strongest warranty packages in the industry.
- Bi-Luminite series pools come with a true lifetime structural warranty and an enhanced 10-year cosmetic interior surface warranty.
- Vivid series pools include a 25-year structural warranty and a 7-year cosmetic interior surface warranty.
These warranties can also be transferred to new owners (limited to 25 years) if you sell your home, giving future buyers peace of mind that your pool continues to add value.
Is the ceramic core technology patented?
We lodged the patent in the early 1990s. The specific method of applying the ceramic microsphere and vinyl ester resin blend required Compass to specially modify its fibreglass spraying equipment, which formed part of that process. We're proud to have innovated this world-leading technology, which is now at the forefront of pool building.
How does the ceramic core compare to a standard fibreglass pool?
The Compass ceramic core uses vinyl ester resin — significantly more water resistant — combined with ceramic microspheres. It comprises a layer of vinyl ester resin (significantly more water resistant) to create a barrier layer, forming a composite that is thicker, stiffer, and more chemically resistant than any standard fibreglass shell. The cross-section of a Compass pool is visibly thicker than competitors, and this directly supports the lifetime structural warranty we're able to offer.
Can I see the ceramic core in the pool?
Yes — when looking at a cross-section of a Compass pool, the ceramic core layer is clearly visible. It appears as a distinct thick layer within the pool shell structure. Your local Compass dealer can show you this cross-section during a consultation so you can see the difference with your own eyes.
Does every Compass Pool have a ceramic core?
Yes. Every single Compass Pool — across all shapes, sizes and colours — is built with the ceramic composite core. It's not an optional upgrade or a premium tier feature. It is the standard Compass construction method, applied to every pool we manufacture.
