South Melbourne Apartment Pool
Case study: Architectural pool integration on a structurally constrained urban site.
Project Overview
This South Melbourne project required Compass Pools to deliver a high-performance lap pool on a site where planning restrictions, a structural obstacle beneath the pool location, and a premium architectural brief made a standard installation impossible.
The result is a fully engineered, purpose-built solution that no other pool company was able to offer — a customised 8-metre Fast Lane pool with an integrated 8-metre acrylic window panel, installed on a fifth-storey site directly above an active building lift shaft.
The Challenge
Four converging constraints made this site one that most pool companies would decline outright.
| Planning depth restriction. | A 1.3-metre maximum depth imposed by planning meant the shell had to be significantly modified and the installation engineered to fit within a constrained vertical envelope. |
| Lift shaft beneath the pool. | With a building lift shaft directly below the pool location, conventional excavation was not possible. The pool had to be supported above the existing structure without exceeding the slab’s load capacity. |
| Full-length acrylic window. | The brief required an 8-metre acrylic window integrated into the pool wall, visible from the interior living space. Permanent water clarity was a non-negotiable design requirement — the view through the glass had to remain pristine. |
| Internal-lift access only. | No external construction access was available. Every component — pool shell, foam base, mechanical plant, steel framing, and acrylic panel — had to be dimensioned and staged to pass through the building’s internal lift. |
Our Solution
Solving this site needed engineering as much as pool know-how. Our team specified a customised Maxi Rib shell with a foam-based load-distribution system and an engineered steel window frame — all delivered within the access and weight constraints of the existing building.
| Modified Maxi Rib shell. | The Fast Lane shell was reduced by nearly 200 mm in height to meet the planning depth limit, with structural integrity maintained through the Maxi Rib reinforcement system. |
| Foam base over the lift shaft. | A foam substrate replaced a conventional concrete base, with precision cut-outs accommodating the in-floor cleaning heads. This distributed the pool’s load safely above the lift shaft and eliminated the need for any excavation. |
| Engineered steel window frame. | A custom steel frame was fabricated to support the pool wall above the 8-metre window opening. The acrylic panel was installed at the correct height to deliver the specified interior view, with the operating water level maintained at 360 mm against the glass. |
| Single-lift crane operation. | The pool shell and acrylic window were lifted simultaneously in one coordinated crane lift with traffic management in place. All remaining materials were brought to the pool level via the internal building lift. |
Why this approach matters
Constrained urban sites — rooftops, podiums, sites above existing structures — rule out the standard excavate-and-pour approach. Compass’s out-of-ground capability, combined with engineered load distribution and component-by-component access planning, opens up sites that would otherwise be impossible to build a pool on.
The Result
The finished installation delivers a pool that reads as a designed feature of the apartment — not a service item bolted onto the build. Every constraint was resolved without compromise.
| Planning compliant. | Full pool installation delivered within the 1.3-metre depth restriction. | |
| Structurally sound. | Load distributed safely above the lift shaft with full engineering sign-off. | |
| Permanently clear water. | The in-floor cleaning system circulates water across the floor automatically, helping maintain the window view without manual intervention. | |
| Architecturally integrated. | All mechanical plant concealed. The pool presents as a designed feature of the space rather than a service install. | |
| Efficient installation. | Pool shell and window placed in a single crane lift, minimising site disruption and traffic impact. |
Key Takeaway
This project is directly relevant to developers and builders working on sites where a standard pool approach won’t fit — whether due to planning constraints, structural limitations, or premium architectural requirements. Compass Pools resolves these challenges through customisation, engineering, and access planning. Engage the team early in the design phase to maximise what’s possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from developers, architects, and builders considering a Compass pool on a constrained or above-structure site.
Can Compass pools be installed above existing structures, like over a lift shaft or on upper floors?
Yes — the South Melbourne project featured on this page is a real-world example, with a pool installed on a fifth-storey slab directly above an active lift shaft. Out-of-ground installations use engineered load distribution (foam substrates, steel framing, structural support) to keep the pool’s load within the slab’s capacity. Each project requires structural engineering input early in the design phase to confirm what’s feasible on the specific site.
Can the pool shell be modified to meet planning depth restrictions?
Yes. On the South Melbourne project the Fast Lane shell was reduced by nearly 200 mm in height to comply with a 1.3-metre planning depth limit, with structural integrity maintained through the Maxi Rib reinforcement system. Pool dimensions and depth can be customised at the manufacturing stage to suit planning, structural, or architectural requirements.
Can Compass integrate an acrylic window into the pool wall?
Yes. Architectural acrylic window panels can be integrated into the pool shell to create a glass-walled feature visible from adjacent interior spaces. The window is installed within an engineered steel frame designed to carry the structural loads above the opening. On the South Melbourne project, an 8-metre acrylic panel was integrated with the operating water level held at 360 mm against the glass.
What happens when site access is restricted to a building lift?
Access constraints are a routine challenge on inner-city apartment and podium sites. The South Melbourne project had no external construction access at all — every component (pool shell, foam base, mechanical plant, steel framing) had to be dimensioned to pass through the internal building lift. Coordinated crane operations are scheduled for components that can’t be lifted internally. Access planning is one of the first things our team works through with the builder.
How does the in-floor cleaning system work on a window-facing pool?
The in-floor cleaning system circulates water across the pool floor through precision cut-outs, helping move debris toward the skimmer and supporting consistent water clarity — particularly important when the pool wall doubles as an architectural feature visible from interior living space. As with all commercial pools, water chemistry is regulated by state public-health authorities and must be managed through the pool’s water-treatment system regardless of cleaning method.
When should developers engage Compass on a project like this?
As early as possible — ideally during the design development phase, before structural engineering is locked in. Constrained sites, planning restrictions, and architectural feature requirements all benefit from being factored into the build documentation rather than retrofitted later.
